Tossing and turning all night is miserable. Just one night of restlessness can affect productivity and mood, but when that restless night stretches into nights and even weeks it can have severe effects on a person’s health. There are many non prescription and prescription drugs on the market that can aid someone who has chronic insomnia in their quest for a restful night’s sleep, but many of these drugs are habit forming and have frightening side effects such as blackouts and sleep walking. If at all possible an insomniac should exhaust all natural methods for treating their insomnia before turning to medication.
The most common cause of insomnia is stress. By alleviating stress it is possible to relieve insomnia and gain a comfortable night’s sleep without the aid of drugs. There are several methods that gain help relax the mind before bed. The color blue is often associated with a calm and relaxed frame of mind. Place a blue lampshade over a bedside light and read a “boring” book for thirty minutes prior to sleep. The sleeper should remove any potential annoyances or distractions. This means they should make sure the temperature is comfortable and any annoying noises or sounds are eliminated. A white noise generator is often helpful.
Sleep is good. That should be in the forefront of any insomniacs mind. They should avoid thinking about any difficulty they have had sleeping. By fretting over sleep the insomniac increases their stress level and makes sleep even more difficult.
